Paul Strand Photo Assignment

These are my photos for the Paul Strand assignment in my photography class. I tried to take interesting pictures of a subject with good shadowing in the picture then turn it black and white.

This is a photo I went to Rockport to take of the Motif #1 building on bearskin neck. As you may be able to tell from the shadow on the building the sun is just setting and shining it's last rays onto this building.
I took this picture at the skate park while it was a sunny day because I thought the shadowing of the skateboard was a cool design.
This is a picture of a water spicket with two drops of water falling in midair. You can see the shadow of the spicket as well.

Paul Strand pre-assignment post

Paul Strand was born October 16, 1890 in New York City and died March 31 1976. He was an american photographer and filmmaker who helped make photography as an art form like it is today. He has pictures covering a number of Genres in America, Europe, and even Africa. One of his most famous pictures was "Wall Street" as seen below. Strand married Rebecca Salsbury, a painter, in 1922 but the he divorced her and married Virginia Stevens in 1935. The later divorced in 1949 and he then married Hasel Kingsbury who was his fellow photographer. He has very unique photographs in black and white and his photo seem to capture a big idea rather than just one little detail and he always has good shadowing in his photos. When taking pictures to try to copy his style of photography one needs to have good shadowing in the pictures and rather than focusing on one detail try to capture a picture with a broad topic in it.

Post Bad Photos Assignment

I think the bad photos assignment was a success for me because they all came out just how I wanted them to. It was difficult to get some of the photos how I did because I didn't just want a bad photo I wanted a bad photo of something good and unique. To get pictures of the Motif #1 building I went all the way to bearskin neck in Rockport and got a few more photographs of the harbor there. To get the ones I took at Lanes cove at sunset I drove from Rockport straight to the cove and ran out of my car with my camera so I could get the sunset in my pictures before it was gone. To get the photos to be bad I played around with the ISO and focus and such as well as gently shaking the camera to get a blurry picture. Over all I did not have any trouble with the assignment and it went pretty well.

Extra Credit Photo

I took this photo during the bad photos assignment and thought it was a unique photo so I thought I would share it. To get this photo from this angle I had to actually climb down a ladder and lay down on my stomach on a wet dock but I think it was worth it because I really like how it came out.credit Photo
This is my favorite photo from the bad photo assignment. To make the picture this blurry a moved the camera fast while I took the picture and did it over and over again until the timing of this picture got this exact   shot. I went all the way to bearskin neck in Rockport just to get a photo like this because I was picturing how good this building would be when the sun was starting to set. You can see the sun shining onto the building and the colors of the blurred skyline in the background.

Inspirational Photographer

After doing a little research I found that many people find Ansel Adams to be one of the best and most famous photographers of all time. I looked at his gallery and the Yosemite special edition photographs really caught my eye. It is interesting how the majority of his photos are in black and white but still look so good. Here is a link to his website.

Questions about camera

What is Aperture and Where is it located?
Aperture is in the lens of the camera and it adjusts the amount of light that reaches the sensor. The button to adjust this from large opening to let in a lot of light to small opening to let in minimum light is above the video recording button.
What is the Shutter and where is it located?
The shutter opens and closes to let light strike the light sensitive surface inside of the camera lens. The shutter button is the same one used to take pictures.
What is ISO and where is it located?
In digital photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The lower the ISO number the less sensitive your camera is to light. 100 ISO is generally the normal to get crisp pictures. To change ISO press the up arrow and select what ISO you want.
Chasing the light

Last weekend I went for a light walk through the woods near sunset time and the way the light came through the trees was beautiful and interesting. I could see beams of light shooting through the tree tops and lighting the path for me. This gave me some cool ideas for interesting photos I can do in the future involving light modifications.
